Gov. Rounds commits funds to support technical institutes

Gov. Mike Rounds has announced today, July 19, that he will commit $740,000 in Future Funds to the state's technical institutes to support the purchase of state of the art equipment, computer software, and supporting IT components.

"Our technical institutes are doing a great job of preparing students for careers in a variety of high-demand fields," Gov. Rounds said. "I am pleased to assist them in their efforts to ensure students graduate with the tools necessary for future success," he added.

Lake Area Technical Institute in Watertown, Southeast Technical Institute in Sioux Falls, Western Dakota Technical Institute in Rapid City, and Mitchell Technical Institute will receive funds to update the technology used in each institute's respective programs. "Not only do the individual students benefit from the programs, but South Dakota as a whole benefits from having a ready and able workforce," the Governor noted.

The Future Fund program has been in existence in South Dakota since 1987. All funds used must be related to research and economic development for the state. Funds committed to the state's technical institutes will work towards achieving the 2010 Initiative goal of improving research and technology infrastructure while fostering partnerships between private companies and educational institutions.
