Murkowski Declares Frankenfish Off the Menu

Location: Anchorage, AK

Senator Lisa Murkowski today released her first television ad of the 2016 general election season. The ad focuses on Murkowski's efforts to keep genetically engineered salmon out of the U.S. market and to protect Alaska's wild fisheries.

The 30-second spot, entitled "Chef Jeff," includes praise for Murkowski's ongoing opposition to the certification of genetically engineered salmon, commonly referred to as "Frankenfish," by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The ad features Pike's Landing and Catering Executive Chef Jeff Brooks of Fairbanks touting Murkowski's efforts, in legislation and through pressure on the administration, to protect an important part of Alaska's economy and way of life, as well as the sustainability of its wild salmon populations.

"Lisa is leading the fight against "Frankenfish" to protect Alaska jobs and fresh-fish lovers around the world," Brooks says in the ad.

Murkowski has introduced bipartisan legislation to stop the introduction of genetically engineered salmon and she has continuously pressed the FDA to require mandatory labeling.

"I wouldn't serve my family genetically engineered fish and I don't think it should be sold to consumers who may mistake it for wild Alaska salmon," Murkowski said in a separate statement. "I don't believe it's good for our families, our sustainable fisheries, or our economy."

Alaska's seafood industry contributes some $6 billion in revenue annually to the state and local governments.

"Our fisheries are recognized around the world for their sustainability, and Senator Murkowski is committed to protecting them for future generations," said Rachel Kallander, deputy campaign manager and spokeswoman for Murkowski. "Lisa has vowed to use whatever means necessary to ensure that Frankenfish do not end up on our families' dinner tables."

Brooks was the first chef to become a certified executive chef in Fairbanks by the American Culinary Federation. In addition to his work at Pike's, Brooks is an adjunct instructor for culinary arts at Tanana Valley College.

"Chef Jeff" was posted on Murkowski's campaign website this morning and begins airing statewide Wednesday.
