Fischer Meets with STRATCOM Nominee General Hyten

Press Release

Date: Sept. 14, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

This afternoon, U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, met with General John Hyten at her office in Washington. General Hyten was nominated by President Obama last week to be the next head of U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha. Senator Fischer released the following statement:

"I enjoyed meeting with General Hyten and discussing his views regarding the key areas within STRATCOM's portfolio: our nuclear forces, missile defense, and cybersecurity. As Secretary Carter has said, STRATCOM's mission is the "bedrock' of our national security. If confirmed, General Hyten will inherit the responsibility to provide this critical capability and continue Admiral Haney's advocacy on its behalf.

"Throughout his career, General Hyten has earned the respect of his colleagues and gained a deep understanding of the national security challenges facing our nation. I look forward to his nomination hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee next week."

General Hyten currently serves as commander of Air Force Space Command at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado. If confirmed by the Senate, General Hyten would succeed Admiral Cecil Haney as the next commander of U.S. Strategic Command.
