When he was running for reelection, President Obama boasted about having "killed" Osama Bin Laden and claimed that his policies "decimated" terrorist organizations like Al Qaeda. Today, it is clear that Islamic jihadists and terrorist groups have a wider footprint throughout the Middle East and North Africa than at any time since 9/11/2001. The massacre of four Americans (including our Ambassador) in Benghazi, the beheading of American journalists in Syria, and the commandeering of the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli all serve as painful reminders that the jihadists are on the march.
Islamic jihadists are mortal enemies of our nation, our people, and our way of life. While individual terrorist groups, such as ISIS and Al Qaeda, present specific tactical threats to our security, the root of the conflict lies in the ideology that motivates these terrorists. ISIS, Hamas, Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, Boko Haram and the jihadist state of Iran all share the same basic ideology: that it is their duty to wage war upon those who do not submit to their religious beliefs. The mixture of this dangerous ideology with nuclear weapons represents an existential threat to the civilized world.
Ron has one of the strongest records on fighting terrorism and defending America against threats from ISIS in the entire Congress. He has teamed up with Senator Tom Cotton to introduce legislation that would restrict foreign aid to countries that accept enemy combatant detainees transferred from Guantanamo Bay. In addition, Ron pushed to protect the American people from jihadists coming to our shores under the refugee program, even before the terrorist attacks in Paris. Ron opposes letting more Syrian refugees into the United States until an air-tight system is in place to prevent even one terrorist from falling through the cracks in our defenses.
