Rep. Ellison Introduces Campus Gun Policy Transparency Act

Press Release

Date: Sept. 8, 2016
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) introduced the Campus Gun Policy Transparency Act, which would require colleges and universities to disclose information on their gun policies on their websites and in promotional materials for prospective students and their families.

Currently, under the Clery Act, colleges and universities that receive federal funding must publish campus safety information and policies. However, schools do not have to publish their campus gun policies with other public safety information.

Additionally, campuses are not required to keep statistics on the presence of firearms during or at the scene of most crimes. The disclosure of conceal and carry policies, as well as gun-related crime statistics are necessary for current and prospective students and families to have access to complete public safety information. This lack of information prevents prospective students, as well as college and university policymakers, from having access to accurate statistics.

"We put safety ratings on our cars and warning labels on our medications, so it makes sense that we do the same for universities that allow guns on campus," said Rep. Ellison. "Students have a right to know if their fellow students are bringing guns to class. The Campus Gun Policy Transparency Act allows them and their families to make informed decisions about the safety of their college campuses."

The legislation is cosponsored by: Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-NM), Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ), Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-NY), Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX), and Rep. Mark DeSaulnier (D-CA).
