Most legislators, including myself, voted for legislation in 2009 to resist the federal REAL ID requirements for Minnesota Driver's Licenses. We learned last fall that federal officials will stop granting waivers or extensions to states that have not complied with the requirements. Individual Minnesotans will not be able to use their Minnesota license starting in early 2018 to board a domestic flight. (Passports are currently required for any international air travel.) I believe we should not wait that long for Minnesota to become compliant. Whether we repeal the 2009 legislation in a special session or in the regular 2016 session, we should move forward.
