Issue Position

Wyoming rightly invests a significant amount of resources in its education system and we should expect a good return on that investment. These results start by striking a balance between accountability and local control. A basic principle of management is to match responsibility with authority. Since education funds are distributed at a statewide level, there should be accountability at the state level. However, we should not put too much emphasis on test scores at the expense of actual learning. I will continue to leverage my experience as an Air Force instructor to ensure Wyoming develops a responsible accountability model.

I am also an advocate for a safe and effective learning environment in our K-12 system. According to the US Department of Education, 10% of our kids will face some sort of educator sexual misconduct before they graduate from high school. Unfortunately, Wyoming is not immune to this reality. By strengthening background checks and hiring practices for teachers as well as eliminating loopholes in our sexual assault statues for teachers in a position of authority, we can ensure that our kids will get the most out of the significant investment we put into our public school system.
