Issue Position: Elder Affairs

Issue Position

In elder affairs, my priorities are economic security and an affordable continuum of care and housing. This means changing our view of aging, to see older adults as resources, not just problems. It means fighting age discrimination and giving older workers opportunities for training and employment. It means preserving pensions for this and future generations. It means developing an affordable and sustainable continuum of care and housing that includes accessible housing, home care, assisted living, rest homes, and nursing homes. It requires developing and sustaining a skilled and adequately paid workforce to care for people with disabilities. All of the services require funding. We don't have the resources with current revenue. We are now slightly below the 50-state average in our taxes as a percent of personal income. We can't compete on being a low-tax, low-services, low-wage state. We need to be frugal, but not continue to cut corners, cut wages, and cut services.
