Issue Position: Championing Our Public Schools

Issue Position

In 2012, the Supreme Court mandated that the legislature fully fund our public schools. Four years later, though, we are still waiting. The Legislature's inaction has led to daily fines of $100,000. That's unacceptable.

Lisa understands that public education is our state's top priority and that great schools lead to an economy that works for all of us.

Fully Funding Education

Our Legislature is failing to fulfill its constitutional obligation to our state's 1.1 million public school students.

Next year, funding for Bellevue schools will be cut by more than $12 million, Issaquah schools by $10 million, Renton schools by $9 million, and Mercer Island schools by $3 million. This shouldn't be happening - our kids deserve better. As your next State Senator, she'll put students first and ensure every child can get a great education.

Higher Education Opportunities

While the legislature was cutting millions of dollars from our State's higher education system, Lisa was volunteering as a mentor for University of Washington business students. As our State Senator, Lisa will work to expand technical and career training programs so talented, local students are prepared for the 21st century in high-demand field like nursing and techology.

Keeping Our Schools Safe

Even with the lead crisis in local schools, and the e-coli outbreak on Mercer Island, the Legislature refuses to require testing of the drinking water in public schools to keep our kids safe. As part of fully funding our schools, Lisa will work to ensure that the schools our children attend are safe.
