Until 1963 Michigan had a part time legislature, and 40 states still do. Lawmakers currently draw a $71,000 salary with $10,000 in expenses, but were only in session for 84 days this year.
This isolates representatives from the people they are supposed to represent, while costing hardworking taxpayers millions of dollars. When the legislature is in constant contact with special interest groups and lobbyists, it cannot claim to truly serve the people.
I will champion a part time legislature to reconnect politicians to real people.
