Deborah has always been a strong proponent of accountability and transparency in government.
In the North Carolina State House, she was a driving force behind several state ethics reform measures, including ones that mandated lobbyists report all gifts they give to legislators, tightened disclosure requirements for lawmakers, and proposed pilot programs for public financing three statewide offices.

As U.S. Senator, Deborah will apply the same level of scrutiny to Congress. She believes that Citizens United has made it so the voices of everyday Americans are drowned out by huge, anonymous donations. No one should be able to hide behind corporations and SuperPACs and make undisclosed and unlimited campaign contributions. In the U.S. Senate, she will work to put an end to the adverse effects of Citizens United once and for all.
