As the former Superintendent of Denver Public Schools, Michael has fought to ensure that all of Colorado's kids have access to a high-quality education.

A leader on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, Michael helped overhaul No Child Left Behind, replacing it with a bipartisan law that returns power and flexibility back to the states and schools while still maintaining accountability.

Michael also passed provisions that incentivize innovation in schools, help better support rural schools and allow communities to spend federal funding on early childhood education.

Michael has worked to support parent and family engagement strategies, successfully passed legislation to expand and make permanent the educator tax deduction, and is working to expand nutrition programs so students who depend on them can access meals over the summer.
