Yesterday evening, U.S. Representatives Cynthia Lummis (WY-At large) voted with a bipartisan majority of her colleagues to pass H.R. 4909: the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2017. Rep. Lummis along with Reps. Ryan Zinke (MT-At large), Kevin Cramer (ND-At large), and Mike Rogers (AL-03) offered an amendment that passed by voice vote earlier in the day. The amendment ensures that U.S. intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) forces are kept on full alert, preventing President Obama from unilaterally disarming our nuclear forces. F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, WY oversees the nation's ICBMs.
"With the geopolitical challenges America faces with Russia, China, North Korea, and Iran, we cannot afford to sacrifice any part of our nuclear triad," said Rep. Lummis. "Our successful amendment will ensure that our intercontinental ballistic missiles, including those based in Wyoming, remain at the ready, on alert, 24/7. The ICBM force is not only an effective nuclear deterrent that is continuously on call, but it is also the most affordable leg of the nuclear triad. I am proud of my colleagues in the House joining to support America's defense, especially during these uncertain and unstable times in the world."
