Rokita-Cosponsored Opioid Bills Pass House

Statement

This week, the House of Representatives took action on addressing the nation's growing opioid epidemic by passing six bills cosponsored by Rep. Todd Rokita. Rep. Rokita released the following statement in response to their passage:

"As I have traveled across Indiana, I have heard countless stories about the devastating effects opioid addiction is having on families and our communities. Last week, I heard from Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officers about the importance of taking action on this issue. This week, I heard from the attendees of the Lugar Series about the root causes of this epidemic. Too many Hoosiers are suffering because of opioid abuse. They are our neighbors, friends, colleagues, and relatives. Every year, the crisis claims over 1,000 Hoosier lives.

"This week, the House passed 18 bills addressing this epidemic. I cosponsored six of these bills because they are commonsense proposals that help compassionately assist those suffering with addiction, while also providing measures to prevent more people from becoming addicted. This is not the end of our action. The House and Senate will conference to create comprehensive legislation on this issue going forward, and I will continue to work with my colleagues to address this crisis."
