Former Nevada Attorney General and U.S. Senate candidate Catherine Cortez Masto released the following statement on today being Equal Pay Day-- the day marking how far into 2016 women have to work to earn the same wages men earned in 2015. In Nevada, women make 85 cents to every dollar their male counterparts make, with minority women in the state facing an even larger pay gap: Nevada Latinas earn 52 cents, African American women 65 cents, and Asian American and Pacific Islander women 68 cents to every dollar a white male makes, respectively.
"It is simply unacceptable that in 2016, women are still earning less than their male counterparts for equal work. The wage gap will cost Latinas in Nevada alone over $1 million dollars over a 40-year career - lost wages that could be used for food, clothing, healthcare, education, or retirement. Unfortunately, one of my opponents, Sharron Angle, has so far remained silent on the issue of paycheck fairness. Even worse, one of her Republican Primary opponents, Congressman Heck, has voted multiple times against equal pay for equal work. As Nevada's next Senator, I will never be silent on this issue and work diligently to solve problems like ending pay discrimination."
