Issues: Education

As product of Ballard High School and the University of Kentucky, I treasure my education for it has given me great opportunities. However, not everyone has an opportunity for a good education. In my work, I have partnered with an inner city boarding school whose students come from a hard environment where poverty reigns, drugs run rampant, and the family unit has broken down. This is one alternative to educating our youth but it illustrates the need for other alternative learning models like charter schools. These types of structures give the best educators the flexibility and autonomy to be creative and innovative and will allow them to customize teaching approaches to match the students. Teachers are one of our greatest assets and providing them the resources is a necessity. Since public funds are used for charter schools, transparency and accountability are vital to ensure and measure success rates.
