Today, Rep. Tulsi Gabbard's amendment to provide $5 million for missile defense in Hawaii and the Asia Pacific was adopted by the House of Representatives. The amendment begins the process for a new missile defense radar in Hawaii and gives the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) funding to improve the state's missile detection capabilities. The House is expected to vote on full passage of the Department of Defense Appropriations Act for FY17 (H.R.5293) tomorrow.

"North Korea's ongoing pursuit of increased nuclear and missile capabilities are a reminder of the serious threat Hawaii and the U.S. mainland face," said Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02). "We need to take this threat seriously and ensure our defenses stay ahead of North Korea's rapid development. My amendment makes an important investment in improving our ability to detect missile threats in Hawaii and ensures the Department of Defense moves quickly to address this threat."
