Van Hollen Statement on Republican Budget Proposal

Statement

Today Maryland Congressman Chris Van Hollen, Ranking Member of the House Budget Committee, released the following statement on the Republican FY 2017 budget proposal:

"This Republican budget takes a sledgehammer to America's competitiveness and working families. It's a budget that helps the rich get richer while everyone else feels like they're running in place or falling behind. It ends the Medicare guarantee and weakens programs that are essential lifelines to vulnerable Americans. And it relies on the failed theory of trickle-down economics to put the burden of deficit reduction squarely on the middle class and those working their way into the middle class, while failing to close a single special interest tax loophole.

"Americans are looking for progress on income inequality, affordable education, infrastructure, retirement security, and a fairer tax code. Democrats are fighting for an economy that works for everyone -- not just those already at the top. Unfortunately, this Republican budget slashes investments that keep our economy strong while serving as a smokescreen for the radical Trump-Cruz-Rubio tax agenda to give massive tax cuts to the wealthy. Hard-working families and those struggling to make ends meet continue to be the victims of this dysfunctional, Tea Party-controlled Republican majority."
