Today, Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09) released the following statement opposing legislation authored by Rep. David G. Valadao (CA-21) to codify the drainage settlement between Westlands Water District and the U.S. federal government:
"I have been vocal in my strong opposition to this settlement agreement that is nothing more than a handout to Westlands, and it should come as no surprise that I oppose this bill, or any legislation, that would codify principles that benefit the nation's largest water district at the expense of taxpayers and the environment. I am deeply concerned about how this legislation will impact the Delta, its ecosystem and regional economies, and water deliveries up and down the state. The Westlands settlement agreement with the U.S. Department of Justice sets a disturbing precedent that rewards negligent behavior, and I will fight against this legislation moving forward."
