South Carolina's first National Apprenticeship Week now underway

South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott recently announced that the first National Apprenticeship Week is underway and scheduled to run through Nov. 7.

"As we kick off the first National Apprenticeship Week, I am committed to finding ways to create and enhance apprenticeship programs across our nation," Scott said. "That's why I joined Sen. Cory Booker to introduce the Leveraging and Energizing America's Apprenticeship Programs (LEAP) Act, modeled after South Carolina's successful apprenticeship program, to help increase the number of registered apprenticeships in the U.S."

Scott lauded the Palmetto State for being a leader in nationally recognized apprenticeship initiatives.

"These programs allow students to not only gain new skills, but to earn while they learn," Scott said. "To ensure our global competitiveness and create more good paying jobs, America's workforce must have access to new opportunities and the skills, training and education that allows them to compete."

Statistics from the U.S. Department of Labor indicate there are presently 445,000 apprentices across the country. Via Apprenticeship Carolina, a division of the S.C. Technical College System, 13,634 apprentices have been served through 761 programs across the state.
