Newsletter: Dave's Weekly Wrap

It was another busy week both in OH-14 and Washington. Let's get right to it:

NDAA

On Thursday, the President vetoed the National Defense Authorization Act. It is a sad day for America when the President prioritizes playing politics instead of paying our troops.

The NDAA is our country's national defense policy bill, which passed with large bipartisan majorities in both the House and Senate. This is a crucial bill because it makes sure our troops have the resources and tools they need to defend us, and protect themselves, from the ever-growing list of threats around the world.

Not only would this bill ensure that we take care of our nation's heroes, it would have given them a 1.3% raise.

Instead, President Obama decided to veto the NDAA because while it would necessarily increase defense spending, it doesn't increase domestic spending on completely unrelated programs and initatives.

You might be saying to yourself - "Wait, why would the President put our nation's security at risk and veto a bill to pay our troops over political issues that have nothing to do with our national defense?"

Well, if you are thinking that, then we think alike - because I am completely flabbergasted that the President would put our nation's heroes in jeopardy.

The NDAA has been signed consecutively for more than 50 years. It's been vetod only 4 times, by 4 different Presidents (Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.) For each of those vetoes, however, the reason for the veto was explicity related to an actual provision in the bill. Each time, the Armed Services Committees were able to work out their differences to find a compromise that works.

Regrettably, President Obama has broken new ground and vetoed this bill over budget issues that are about politics, not protecting and paying our troops. I hope he will change his mind.

Friend of AMAC

If you read the Weekly Wrap, you've probably noticed that I have had a chance to meet a number of times with members of AMAC, the Association of Mature American Citizens.

I always enjoy these meetings because I get to hear from my constituents over 50 who always have an informed perspective on the issues of the day.

On Wednesday, I was honored as a "Friend of AMAC" and was proud to be able to receive this award in D.C. I look forward to my next meeting with AMAC members in OH-14.

Nurse-Family Partnership

As Co-Chair of the House Nursing Caucus, I was glad to welcome a large group from the Nurse-Family Partnership to D.C. on Thursday. My wife Kelly is a nurse and I know how important they are to their patients and the populations they serve.

Sirna's Farm

Before I left for D.C. this week, I had the chance to get an informative tour of Sirna's Farm Inc. with folks from the Ohio Farm Bureau and Geauga Country Farm Bureau.
