After a Browns loss on Thursday Night Football, I hope you are enjoying a Sunday free from disappointment.
Roads & Bridges
This week, the House passed a major, bipartisan transportation bill. By a wide bipartisan majority, we passed the first multi-year transportation bill in a decade and I was proud to support it.
The Surface Transportation Reauthorization & Reform Act will fund our roads, bridges, and infrastructure projects for years to come. As I've said before, there's no such thing as a Republican road or a Democrat bridge, that's why it's so important that both sides of the aisle come together to do what is right for our country. A crumbling bridge is dangerous to everybody.
Great Lakes
As I hope you know, one of my chief priorities in Congress is protecting and preserving our Great Lakes. One of the ways I do that is with my involvement in the Great Lakes Task Force.
This working group of House and Senate members from both sides of the aisle meets often to determine ways we can work together to ensure Congress does everything it can for our Great Lakes.
This week we had a meeting with members of the Army Corps of Engineers and EPA to get an update on what's being done to stop Asian Carp from entering our Great Lakes. We had a great attendance with Congressmen and Senators from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin and Minnesota all present to get an update and ask questions.
Here's a picture of me going through my notes and finalizing my questions before the meeting, with Illinois Senator Mark Kirk and Michigan Congressman Dan Benishek catching up a few feet from me.
A New Concept
Ohio Senator Rob Portman hosted a panel discussion with Brandon Chrostowski from Edwins Leadership & Restaurant Institute about the great work they are doing to combat our nation's high rates of recidivism. Edwin's is located just outside the 14th Congressional District, but takes "a unique approach at giving formerly-incarcerated adults a foundation in the hospitality industry while providing a support network necessary for a successful reentry."
As a Geagua County Prosecutor for 25 years, I have certainly seen firsthand too many criminals come through the courtroom again and again. So, I was interested to hear about the techniques used at Edwin's and discuss with Senator Portman how we can work together on criminal justice reform issues.
You can read more about Edwin's here.
I try to keep my social media networks updated often with how I am working for you, so I you will take a second to "Follow" me on Twitter & "Like" my Facebook page if you don't already.
Every day I am honored to serve as your voice in Congress,
