Statement on Real ID compliance

Statement

Date: Oct. 30, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

"Although Real ID was passed before I came to Congress, I have long been opposed to it. Changing or repealing it, however, is not on the agenda of the Republican-led Congress.

"The New Mexico Senate passed a bipartisan piece of legislation, similar to what other states have passed, to address this issue. House Democrats made it clear they would act, but House Republicans failed to do so and did not bring up the bipartisan Senate bill. If the House would have brought up bipartisan compromise Real ID legislation and sent it to the Governor for her signature, New Mexico would not be in this position. Other states have found a way to make this work, and the Senate bill would enable New Mexico to do so as well."
