October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and I was proud to introduce the Documents for Continued Safety Act with a coalition of my colleagues led by Congressman Patrick Murphy of Florida. Our bipartisan bill provides critical support to survivors of domestic violence in their greatest time of need, and I look forward to working across the aisle to pass it.
I also joined Congressmen Mike Coffman, Peter King and Juan Vargas to introduce the Military Enlistment Opportunity Act. Our bipartisan legislation creates a fair pathway for eligible immigrants, including young undocumented immigrants who were brought to America as children, to earn legal permanent resident status by serving honorably in the United States Military for a minimum of five years. When American immigrants step forward and lay their lives on the line to defend our nation, they should earn the right to legally live in the country they are defending.
Back at home in the 8th District, my office hosted Satellite Office Hours at the Addison Public Library. Satellite Office Hours are a great way to get help with federal agencies or benefits if you can't make it out to my Schaumburg, and I hope you will consider visiting us when we have office hours near you.
We also hosted two other great events in the District this week: a fire grants workshop for fire departments in the region seeking federal assistance to protect their firefighters and communities as well as a Service Academy informational session. If you are interested in applying to one of the five military service academies, you'll need a recommendation from a Congressional office. You can find out more about how to begin the process here.
This month I was also excited to announce the award of more than $600,000 in federal funding to hire staff and increase capacity at two family health care centers in the 8th District, one in Elgin and another in Addison.
And last but definitely not least, our Chicago Cubbies won the National League Division Series this week! Go Cubs Go!
I hope you are having a great week.
Sincerely,
Congresswoman Duckworth
