District 59 has been blessed with two decades of residential growth, but our infrastructure has failed to keep pace with that growth. New solutions are needed to fundamentally rethink the ways in which state government funds road projects.
The state collects a 20 cent per gallon tax on gas, which generates roughly $600 million per year. But the state has proven itself frivolous in spending this money. The prime example of this is the "bridge to nowhere" built in St. Francisville, while high growth communities like Prairieville and Dutchtown are neglected.
I will propose legislation allowing parishes to retain a nickel of that 20 cent tax on gas. Let's allow a portion of this revenue to stay home, so that we can have a major local road project every three to four years, instead of every three to four decades.
