Michael Moffett has provided voters with clear stances on key issues by responding to the 2024 Political Courage Test.
| Pro-life | a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support legalizing abortion when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds (e.g. Medicaid) for organizations that perform abortions? | ||
| Yes | a) In order to balance the budget, do you support limiting state government spending on social programs (e.g. SNAP, TANF)? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support a decrease in income taxes in order to promote economic growth? | ||
| No | c) Do you support a wealth tax in order to pay for public programs in your state? | ||
| N.H. has no income tax but the reduction and elimination of the Interest and Dividends tax will help families and the economy. | |||
| No | a) Do you support capital punishment for violent crimes? | ||
| Yes | b) Should an individual under 18 accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police? | ||
| Yes | d) Do you support the use of private prisons? | ||
| No | e) Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenders? | ||
| No | f) Do you support the legalization of marijuana for recreational use in New Hampshire? | ||
| 1617-year-olds could be tried as adults, depending upon the circumstances. I do NOT support "sanctuary cities or states." | |||
| No | a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth (e.g. grants, tax incentives)? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector (e.g. for business or the environment)? | ||
| No | c) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of New Hampshire? | ||
| No | d) Do you support government spending on affordable housing projects in New Hampshire? | ||
| While generally speaking state government should not be spending to compete with the private sector, it can redirect federal monies in sensible ways. And municipalities can choose to give property tax breaks if there is local sentiment to do so. I support N.H. supporting the federal minimum wage requirement. N.H. wages have gone way up without a state minimum wage. States or municipalities that have mandated significant minimum wage increases have put enterprises out of businesses and people out of work. | |||
| No | a) Do you support adopting federal education standards (e.g. Common Core) in New Hampshire? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support state funding for charter schools? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support increasing teacher salaries AND/OR benefits in New Hampshire? | ||
| No | d) Should immigrants in the United States who graduate from New Hampshire high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities, regardless of immigration status? | ||
| Yes | e) Do you support allowing schools to hire part-time teachers without requiring that they be certified by the State Board of Education? | ||
| Restricting responses to "yes" or "no" unfortunately limits nuanced answers. For example, I could support some immigrants receiving in-state tuition consideration, depending upon several variables. And as someone who has spent much of his life in education, I recognize the potential in occasionally utilizing and certifying human resources with great experience in certain areas without requiring four-year or graduate degrees. | |||
| No | a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support state governments allowing permits for drilling on public lands? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives? | ||
| Subsidies for dubious renewable energy programs raise utility rates for everyone. And N.H. has almost no drilling. | |||
| No | a)Do you support limiting campaign contributions from corporations, unions, and individuals? | ||
| No | b) Do you support the use of an independent or bipartisan commission for redistricting? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls? | ||
| No | d) Do you support automatic voter registration? | ||
| No | e) Do you support the implementation of ranked choice voting in New Hampshire? | ||
| Limiting campaign contributions violates the 1st Amendment. Redistricting should be conducted by legislators elected by the people, not by judges or commissions. Photo identification at the polls is a reasonable counter to voter fraud. | |||
| No | a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation (e.g. red flag laws, closing the boyfriend loophole)? | ||
| No | b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support the right to concealed carry in New Hampshire? | ||
| N.H. is perhaps the safest state in the country, according to data. Our current policies seem to be working. The 2nd Amendment says what is says. | |||
| Yes | a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse? | ||
| No | b) Do you support a government-run (e.g. single-payer) healthcare program such as Medicare-for-All? | ||
| No | c) Should an individual have the right to choose to die (e.g. those with a terminal illness) through euthanasia? | ||
| No | d) Do you support mandating vaccinations (e.g. for school or employment)? | ||
| No | e) Do you support expanding paid family AND/OR medical leave benefits (e.g. maternity leave)? | ||
| No | f) Should the government be able to regulate the cost of prescription drugs? | ||
| Again, the yes/no options don't allow for important nuances. There are gray areas that have long been part of end-of-life decision-making, as medical ethicists are well aware. Price controls generally have disastrous and often unanticipated consequences. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support inclusion of sexual orientation in New Hampshire's anti-discrimination laws? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in New Hampshire's anti-discrimination laws? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support greater efforts by New Hampshire's state government in closing gender, racial, and other wage gaps? | ||
| The state does need to be very careful not to engage in reverse discrimination if it gets involved in DEI mandates. | |||
| I support the traditional conservative approaches that have helped position N.H. as "the best state in which to live." Public sector over-hiring with accompanying pension obligations have wrecked many blue state budgets. We need to avoid that. We need to display courage and common sense when dealing with countless special interests seeking public wherewithal. Re: education, we need to honor and empower students and families as opposed to unions and bureaucrats. We need to stress fundamentals and accountable teaching practices that include reasonable assessments. We need to look at how "progressive" policies have ruined states like California and avoid pressures to emulate those policies in N.H. |
