Indiana State Legislative Election 2020 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes b) Do you support legalizing abortion when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
No c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
d) Other or expanded principles:
Yes a) In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
No b) In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Balancing the budget may be a combination of decreasing budgets, while raising taxes within certain tax brackets. The budget is quite complex and this can't be determined by a simplified solution.
Yes a) Do you support a limit on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Yes b) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes c) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
No d) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
Yes e) Do you support automatic voter registration?
f) Do you support abolishing the role of Township Assessor?
The Township Assessor roles have been abolished in the state of Indiana.
No a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
No b) Should an individual under 18 accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
No c) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
No d) Do you support the use of private prisons in Indiana?
No e) Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders?
f) Other or expanded principles:
Yes a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
Yes b) Do you support lowering state income taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
No c) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
No d) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
Yes e) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Indiana?
No f) Do you support requiring employers to provide paid family leave?
No g) Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
Yes h) Do you support the establishment of a work share program in Indiana to assist access to unemployment benefits?
The Paid Family Leave program that I authored and will be refiling in the 2021 session is set up similar to unemployment insurance requiring a small contribution from employee and employer, are tiered according to income and would allow up to a 12 week paid leave when they take time off for an illness, taking care of a loved one or a newborn child. Qualification for the Family Medical Leave will protect and individual's employment, while the paid leave will allow them to be able to afford the leave.
No a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in Indiana?
No b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yes c) Do you support increasing teacher salaries AND/OR benefits in Indiana?
Yes d) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Indiana high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
e) Other or expanded principles:
Yes a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes b) Do you support government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yes c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
Indiana has one of the lowest water quality and one of the highest polluters in the country. Indiana is not doing its part to curb greenhouse gas emissions nor is it keeping our communities safe. High incidences of cancers and long term illnesses are a result of the lack of protection to our state, its people and resources.
Yes a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Yes b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
No c) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom after passing gun safety training?
Yes d) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
Accountability of irresponsible gun ownership need to be addressed. Weapons that fall into the hands of children causing injury or death need to hold the owner of the weapon accountable when the owner does not prevent or restrict access that leaves the weapon available for it to fall into the wrong hands.
Yes a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
Yes b) Do you support Medicaid expansion through Indiana's health care programs?
No c) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yes d) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
No e) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
No f) Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19?
As I mentioned previously, I authored a bill on Paid Family Medical Leave. This can be achieved without causing financial hardship to employers or employees. Had this past legislation this past session, we would be on our way to establishing a program in the state of Indiana.
Yes a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Indiana's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Indiana's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes c) Do you support greater efforts by Indiana state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
No d) Should gender be a required piece of information on Indiana driver's licenses?
I have not really thought about the issue of gender being a required piece of information on an Indiana Driver's license. Since the issue of gender has evolved so must our way of thinking about gender and issues surrounding gender. How that is represented on a driver's license will likely change also over time. Until there is a hate crime law in Indiana naming sexual or gender identity, we will likely need to continue this conversation.
I am a candidate that is fighting for public education in our state, health care access and affordability for all. We have a lot of work to do in our state to meet the needs of workers, children and families to help everyone thrive. We were already facing enormous challenges in our state to meet this goal. With the pandemic, many of the shortfalls of the state have been emphasized. It is going to take all of us to get through these challenges.
My priorities will be to continue to fight for Hoosiers. I will be filing the same Bills I did last year and have many more. It is time for the GOP leadership to hear our Bills and work together for Hoosiers. Two of my bills will be a Paid family medical Bill and a bill for universal newborn screening of Cytamegelavirus (CMV) the leading infectious cause of birth defects including hearing loss, blindness and others. I'll fight for our public schools to be funded and Mental Health to be a priority.
