On The Ballot: Running, Democratic for State House (TX) - District 136
| Pro-choice | a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support legalizing abortion when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape? | ||
| No | c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions? | ||
| I support access to abortion. Every Texan deserves access to the full range of pregnancy-related care, from contraception and abortion to prenatal and postpartum care. Post-Dobbs decision, the insistence of statewide leaders to threaten doctors with criminal prosecution has put those with difficult pregnancies' lives in danger. The lack of exceptions for rape, incest, or health is unconscionable. | |||
| No | a) In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support raising taxes on any income or on any entity, to promote economic growth? | ||
| Our budget is an expression of our values. We must make overdue investments in education, healthcare, and workforce. | |||
| No | a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes? | ||
| No | b) Should an individual under 18 accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult? | ||
| No | c) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police? | ||
| No | d) Do you support the use of private prisons? | ||
| No | e) Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders? | ||
| Charging of youth offenders should depend on the circumstances and mitigating factors, but in general we should not be charging youths as adults. I'm a firm believer in the urgent need for evidence-driven reforms that focus on keeping low-level, non-violent offenders out of jail, reducing recidivism (e.g. through diversion, drug and alcohol treatment, re-entry programs and job training), decriminalizing mental illness, breaking cycles of abuse and neglect in our community, and ending the school to prison pipeline. I also support legalizing and taxing cannabis and its derivatives as well as expunging the records of those convicted solely of low-level possession. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth? | ||
| No | b) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Texas? | ||
| Yes | d) Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19? | ||
| I am a union member. I support the rights of workers to organize and believe people should treated with respect and dignity in the workplace. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in Texas? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support state funding for charter schools? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support increasing teacher salaries AND/OR benefits in Texas? | ||
| Yes | d) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Texas's high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities? | ||
| Outside of maintaining and increasing funding for our public schools and supporting our teachers, my top three priorities are increasing the availability of counselors, support staff, and LSSPs; and arts and civics education; and reversing the learning loss we've seen during COVID-19. Funding is especially key to ensure we are attracting and retaining the top educators, that we can have small class sizes with proper supplies and technology, and to guarantee that pre-K, childhood literacy, and special education get the support they need. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives? | ||
| Yes | d) Do you support state government regulation of the energy grid in Texas? | ||
| The most important environmental issues are protecting our public lands and wildlife, managing and ensuring our water resources, and working with local governments to protect local control and encourage environmental sustainability through recycling, renewables/reuse programs, and otherwise. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support the regulation of campaign contributions from corporations, unions, and individuals? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting? | ||
| No | c) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls? | ||
| Yes | d) Do you support automatic voter registration? | ||
| No | e) Do you support limiting local counties' ability to expand voting options in state and local elections in Texas? | ||
| We need to make it easier to vote and participate in our democracy, not harder. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation? | ||
| Yes | b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows? | ||
| No | c) Should a license be required for gun ownership? | ||
| I do not support open carry or permitless carry or carrying guns at schools, hospitals, bars, government buildings and otherwise. We need common sense reform that saves lives and prioritizes safety. | |||
| Yes | a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support a government-run (single-payer) healthcare program such as Medicare-for All? | ||
| No | c) Should an individual have the right to choose to die through euthanasia? | ||
| Yes | d) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations? | ||
| Yes | e) Do you support expanding paid family AND/OR medical leave opportunities? | ||
| Yes | f) Do you support lowering the cost of prescription drugs? | ||
| I support access to high-quality, universal healthcare, including moving towards publicly-funded healthcare. In the meantime, we must expand Medicaid, which would provide millions of working Texans with health insurance, add billions of dollars back into the Texas economy, lower all of our insurance premiums, and save thousands of our neighbors lives. Medicaid expansion will not solve all of our problems, but it will provide immediate relief to one in four Texans who are uninsured by giving them access to healthcare. | |||
| Yes | a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Texas's anti-discrimination laws? | ||
| Yes | b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Texas's anti-discrimination laws? | ||
| Yes | c) Do you support greater efforts by Texas's state government in closing gender, racial and other wage gaps? | ||
| No | d) Do ou support requiring transgender athletes to compete intramural and interscholastic sports that match their sex assigned at birth in Texas? | ||
| Every Texan deserves dignity, opportunity, and respect, and to be treated equally and fairly by their government. | |||
| The freedom to vote is non-negotiable. I?ve passed laws that put election info and polling places online, created a mail ballot tracking system, and ensure voters with disabilities are provided reasonable accommodations. I support online and same day registration, universal vote by mail, expanded early voting hours, restoring mobile voting, and modernizing our election systems. | |||
| We must enroll the 350,000+ currently eligible but unenrolled kids in state healthcare programs; end the 16-year waitlist for community-based care for Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities; and give teachers, state employees, and retirees a raise. With a record budget surplus and $13 Billion plus in the ?rainy day fund? expected, we must make overdue investments in healthcare, education, and workforce. |
