What is the Political Courage Test?

Delaware State Legislative Election 2024 Political Courage Test

Pro-life a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes b) Do you support legalizing abortion when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Yes c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds (e.g. Medicaid) for organizations that perform abortions?
I fully support choices in health care that improve a womans quality of life and in particular I recognize and greatly support regularly scheduled tests for women that have been shown to save lives. Under the Womens Right to Know Act, which I sponsored, if a woman comes into a clinic where abortions are performed and is determined to have an abortion and is not interested in any information to dissuade her from following through with her decision, the Act does not interfere with her decision. However, if a woman comes in unsure of her decision to abort, or worse, being coerced into having an abortion, the decision to see an ultrasound should be hers. Withholding information is deceptive and tantamount to imposing the will of the abortionist over the will of the patient. I have hundreds of emails and thousands of petitions in support of a woman's right to know in regards to ultrasounds. Many are from women who had abortions and learned only later about the gestational age of the child they were carrying that was aborted. Their stories are heartbreaking. They said if they only knew about the child growing inside their bodies they would have chosen life. But they were told this is just a clump of cells.

No d) Do you support Delaware's 2023 legalization of marijuana for sale and recreational use?
I served on the Adult Use Cannabis Task Force. What was repeated many times was that there was a lot we do not know about the effects of the long-term use of marijuana. What we know about the dangers should have convinced us that the risk was too high to allow legalization in Delaware. Here are two examples: The National Academy of Medicine found that cannabis use is likely to increase the risk of developing schizophrenia and other psychoses, the higher the use, the greater the risk. Teenagers who smoke marijuana regularly are about three times as likely to develop schizophrenia. A January 2018 paper in the American Journal of Psychiatry showed that people who use were almost three times as likely to use opiates three years later. I will never understand how the majority of legislators ignored these dangers and voted to legalize recreational marijuana. We agree that we want to teach our youth to avoid drug use, then we legalize marijuana with all its known risks.

Value of Life Restoration A commitment to protect life from conception to natural death, including support for the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Act and opposition to physician-assisted suicide. None of our Delaware abortion laws, many passed in 2024, protect women?s health, especially emotional and psychological health. Family Reinforcement A commitment to protect the Delaware family as the foundation of civil society by promoting laws that support the family unit. Our laws should encourage couples to stay together and help create a healthy environment for raising children. Religious Liberty Protection A commitment to freedom of religion and informed conscience. I support the freedom of Delawareans to act in accordance with their religious beliefs and the will of God. Government is constitutionally prohibited from policing or censoring speech based on religious convictions.
