| We need big, structural change to solve the deep, systemic problems we face as a country. That requires more than just a few priorities. Putting economic and political power in the hands of the people. Rooting corruption out of government. Transforming our economy so that every person?no matter where they live, or who their parents are, or how much money they have has real opportunity. Tackling the climate crisis head-on to save our planet. Reckoning with and addressing systemic racism. Defending our democracy. And more. I have previously published plans to address a wide array of issues, which you can see at https://elizabethwarren.com/plans. I'll discuss just three of the issues I've been focused on. The first is universal child care. Child care is part of the basic infrastructure of this nation. It's infrastructure for families. A lack of child care is holding back our economy and keeping parents out of the workforce. It's giving lie to the notion that there's equal opportunity in our country. We can't build a future by shortchanging our babies and families. The more we invest in child care, the better for our families, our small businesses and our entire economy. My proposal of a two-cent wealth tax would pay for universal child care and much more. A second priority is stopping corporate price gouging. From grocery stores, to Department of Defense contractors, to prescription drug companies, giant corporations are squeezing American families and the American government for fatter profits. The Biden administration, and, in the future, the Harris administration, need strong tools to tackle this problem. I've been helping to lead the charge against corporate price gouging, which needs to be tackled both legislatively and through executive action. A third priority is locking the revolving door between industry and government. When someone serves in government with plans to immediately turn around and work in the industry they've been overseeing, that individual faces obvious incentives to advance the interests of their future employer. And when someone moves immediately from a regulated company to a job regulating that company, the public is right to worry about the risk that such individuals will prioritize the interests of their old bosses. I have repeatedly introduced major legislation to tighten up the rules to ensure that when government officials are making decisions, they are considering only the public interest. And I've pushed executive branch officials to take ethics pledges more stringent than what the currently lax laws allow. This is only a small sample of my recent priorities. But they exemplify my primary goal of fighting for American families every day. |
