What is the Political Courage Test?

Indiana State Legislative Election 2024 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes b) Do you support legalizing abortion when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
No c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds (e.g. Medicaid) for organizations that perform abortions?
I oppose Indiana's near total ban on abortion and will work to restore abortion right in our state. Women have the right to make their own reproductive health decisions. We all have personal beliefs about abortion. For some, it's grounded in their faith, for others, it's based on science. I would never ask anyone to change their deeply held personal beliefs. However I don't think anyone should legislate those beliefs on to others. Like most Americans, I believe people should have the freedom to make their own personal decisions with the counsel and support of those they love and trust. I don?t believe any politician should be able to control your reproductive decisions.
a) In order to balance the budget, do you support limiting state government spending on social programs (e.g. SNAP, TANF)?
No b) Do you support a decrease in income taxes in order to promote economic growth?
c) Do you support a wealth tax in order to pay for public programs in your state?
Indiana already has limited government spending on social programs. I support replacing our flat income tax with a graduated income tax.
No a) Do you support capital punishment for violent crimes?
No b) Should an individual under 18 accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
No c) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
d) Do you support the use of private prisons?
No e) Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenders?
Immigration enforcement is a federal responsibility. Mandatory sentences for nonviolent drug offenders perpetuates mass incarceration. There is widespread evidence that these sentences produce substantial harm with no overall benefit to control crime. Eliminating these laws would support a more just and equitable criminal justice system.
Yes a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth (e.g. grants, tax incentives)?
No b) Do you support reducing state government regulations on the private sector (e.g. for business or the environment)?
Yes c) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Indiana?
Yes d) Do you support government spending on affordable housing projects in Indiana?
b) The purpose of government relations is to protect health and safety and the environment. I don't believe Indiana businesses are overly burdened by regulations.
a) Do you support adopting federal education standards (e.g. Common Core) in Indiana?
No b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yes c) Do you support increasing teacher salaries AND/OR benefits in Indiana?
Yes d) Should immigrants in the United States who graduate from Indiana high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities, regardless of immigration status?
I believe Indiana should require more accountability from charter schools in order to receive state funding.
Yes a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
No b) Do you support state governments allowing permits for drilling on public lands?
Yes c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
Climate modeling by the Purdue Climate Change Research Center shows our state becoming warmer and wetter with the pace of these changes picking up speed as heat-trapping gases, produced by humans burning fossil fuels, continue accumulating in the atmosphere. We must retire our aging coal plants, retrain miners, and encourage the production of sustainable energy. By investing in clean, renewable energy, we will protect Hoosiers from the harmful effects of burning fossil fuels, while providing good-paying jobs and strengthening our economy.
Yes a)Do you support limiting campaign contributions from corporations, unions, and individuals?
Yes b) Do you support the use of an independent or bipartisan commission for redistricting?
Yes c) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
Yes d) Do you support automatic voter registration?
Yes e) Do you support the implementation of ranked choice voting in Indiana?
Yes a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation (e.g. red flag laws, closing the boyfriend loophole)?
Yes b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
No c) Do you support the right to concealed carry in Indiana?
Indiana has one of the highest gun homicide rates in the country. Over half of Indiana's suicides are by firearms and our rate of suicides by firearms has been consistently higher than the national average. We need common sense gun laws to stem the violence: measures like requiring safe storage, allowing cities and towns to have gun policies more stringent than the state law, increasing the minimum age for possessing a handgun to age 21, and restoring the requirement to get a permit to carry a gun.
Yes a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
Yes b) Do you support a government-run (e.g. single-payer) healthcare program such as Medicare-for-All?
c) Should an individual have the right to choose to die (e.g. those with a terminal illness) through euthanasia?
Yes d) Do you support mandating vaccinations (e.g. for school or employment)?
Yes e) Do you support expanding paid family AND/OR medical leave benefits (e.g. maternity leave)?
Yes f) Should the government be able to regulate the cost of prescription drugs?
No g) Do you support banning gender affirming care for transgender youth in Indiana?
Yes h) Do you support the legalization of marijuana for medicinal use in Indiana?
c. I agree in principle but need more information to make an informed decision.
Yes a) Do you support inclusion of sexual orientation in Indiana's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Indiana's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes c) Do you support greater efforts by Indiana's state government in closing gender, racial, and other wage gaps?
c. I have offered legislation to close the gender and racial wage gaps.
Work to overturn Indiana's near total ban on abortion. Women should make their own reproductive health decisions, not politicians. Support lifelong education from universal Pre-K to higher education whether that's a certificate, a two- or four-year, or advanced degree. State funding should focus on public education where 90% of Hoosier children receive their education, including paying educators a competitive wage and showing them the respect they deserve. I would decrease or eliminate public funding for private school vouchers as a way to better fund public education. I don't oppose private education, but Indiana cannot adequately fund public and private education systems. Support our local economy by raising the minimum wage and bringing more well-paying jobs and high quality, affordable childcare to Muncie.
