North Carolina State Legislative Election 2020 Political Courage Test

Abortion as an option in any format should be early in a pregnancy and be only a limited option. There is a human life to be considered.

The state frequently pays for things that are not a primary function of government and these can be eliminated or reduced before cutting salaries and benefits or raising taxes. Also, focusing on business growth has increased our revenue collections without raising taxes. We have seen this approach work over the past 10 years.

I have studied independent redistricting and see that such a thing may not really exist. As part of redistricting in the last 10 years, we have followed the rules until they change by the courts. We have been as fair and transparent as can be. There is a small amount of discretion and that should be left to the legislature.

Several of these questions are not hard yes or no. Certain persons under 18 commit such heinous crimes, they should be treated as adults. Certain drug offenses when done repeatedly can be more dangerous than other violence. Most crimes have an element of hate. Defining beyond that will take a fine legal mind.

Incentives have become a necessary evil in state government. They need to be tightly defined and clawed back if conditions not met. Raising minimum wage will eliminate young people from getting part time jobs and will cause there to be less jobs. We have seen lots more automation in check outs and fast food restaurants as a result of this idea. Paid family leave should be a benefit left up to the businesses. I only support business relief because the government has force them to close rather than allow them to make concessions.

I believe our education standards in North Carolina are stronger than the federal standards would be. No child left behind seem to drag our students down. Charter schools are public schools and serve tax-paying citizens. We have voted the last 4 years for raises and benefits but have had those budgets vetoed. Illegal immigrants need to be treated as out of state students at a minimum.

Renewables should only be funded on the development phase. They should then only be continued if they can be financially feasible. Greenhouse emissions should be an industry issue. The Clean Drinking Water initiatives could be supported depending on the nature of those. Water is critical and we have had various infrastructure problems that need help.

I am hoping we find some effective treatment for opioid abuse but not aware of many effective programs at this time. Medicaid expansion will make the cost of health insurance rise for all other individuals. Medicaid has been fraught with fraud and overruns. Further, there are a limited number of providers who take Medicaid due to its minimal reimbursement rate. If we expand Medicaid, there will be even fewer spaces available for recipients. As to euthanasia, people should be able to be pain free as their life ends.

The state can close its own pay gaps but should not mandate what a private business chooses to pay. There may be different reasons for different pay. The authority to remove monuments and memorials should be based on who owns or has legal authority over the same.
I have worked on both criminal justice reform and child abuse with more focus on what occurs in homes with substance abuse and addiction.
We need more health care available to the uninsured. Medical care providers in clinics and FMQH are providing this need. We need to find good working groups and help them with funding.
