Reason for Seeking Public Office:
I am running for NC Senate because our court system is broken, both criminal & family courts. In Family court, the term the best interest of the children is thrown around but can usually be better substituted for what makes the most money for the state, and children are predominantly told that their father has more value as a visitor and a paycheck, rather than as a parent. I will submit and champion legislation requiring courts to award 50/50 custody to all fit parents for temporary custody orders, and requiring a rebuttable presumption for shared parenting (Min. 35% parenting time) for all fit parents as a result of custody disputes. As far as criminal court goes, we do a great disservice incarcerating individuals that would be better served with treatment to prevent recidivism, especially for individuals who are incarcerated due to addictions or mental disorders.
