Reason for Seeking Public Office:

Utah is a good state. It can be better and as the New Voice from southern Utah, I'll strive to make that happen. State officials continually say, "Utah is the best managed state in the country!" and it might be for business - but not for many of our citizens, especially our children, our veterans, our elderly and our uninsured. I've listened to community leaders, neighbors, and business owners; they believe the way Utah is being governed must change if we are to move forward. This means sending different voices to the legislature, including women's voices. I'm up to that challenge! I'll be a voice for all Utah families! As a former teacher, who has been involved in varied community activties in Washington County, Ill work to: Attract diverse career opportunities to southern Utah that support a living wage. Provide stable, dependable funding for K-12 public education by requiring industries removing our nonrenewable natural resources to pay their fair share. Seek balance between land use and tourism while preserving the beauty of southern Utah for all to enjoy. Improve air and water quality while addressing long-term water conservation. I am against the building of the Lake Powell Pipeline; it is not needed and will only continue to line the pockets of those who own land along the proposed route and the contractors. Serious conservation has never been addressed in this desert area. This, along with education, should be our priority

An analogy I like is to think about brainstorming a solution to challenges. What happens if everyone is of the same mindset? How many possible solutions result? Just a few. Now think about adding diversity of thought, experience, perspective to the group of brainstormers. The number and quality of the solutions increase dramatically. This is what has to happen in the Utah Legislature. Help make me the New Voice from Southern Utah in the Legislature! VOTE for Dorothy Engelman for HD 74!
