Awards:
I've won some awards - but there is a saying about awards - "so what have you done lately".... Awards don't carry a lot of weight, if what you did to earn them makes no significant difference in the long run. So let's look at the real rewards.... Teachers - do you know that my kindergarten teacher lives in Nevada - she is the one who started my passion for learning... Every teacher will not receive a reward, but they change lives every day. So let's just say my first award, was to have Ms. Susie Ruppert as my kindergarten teacher.
Father's Occupation:
Farmer
Favorite Book:
Pride and Prejudice - Jane Austin was a courageous and brilliant author for her day.
Favorite Quote:
Making the decision to have a child is momentous. It is to decide forever to have your heart go walking around outside your body. -- Elizabeth Stone
and
The true measure of spirituality is not how angry we become toward sinners, but how Christlike. Our mission is not to see men destroyed, but redeemed.-- Francis Frangipane
First Car:
I was blessed to be loaned my grandmother's 1960 Ford Falcon
First Job:
If you count working on the family farm, as a first job, that would be it, milking cows, gathering eggs the full "Little House on the Prairie" experience. First paying job was babysitting for 25 cents an hour and the step up to the big time in high school was to land a job "detassling corn". With the rural up bringing, there is a strong attachment to environmental issues as well as issues related to the rural community that served me well as I later moved into the position of an environmental reporter.
Mother's Occupation:
Farmer
Priority Issues:
I believe the key to good public service is to listen to people like you and work side by side with people from all walks of life who stand up and demand that our elected leaders be accountable to the people. I believe public service is about people and putting Nevadans back to work, not about a political party. I believe we need a stronger Nevada - not a bigger bureaucracy; it?s time our elected officials were accountable to the taxpayer.
Education
I believe that we need to focus on K-12 education. Existing funding needs to be directed towards teachers and students rather than administrative bureaucracies or buildings. Poor performing schools can discourage businesses owners and their families from relocating here, which means no new jobs and no new opportunities for Nevadans. We need to realize that schools and businesses are tied together with our economy. Our unemployment is above 13 percent and Nevada?s high school graduation rate ranks the lowest in the nation at 47.3 percent. The kids and our teachers need our support.
Employment
With Nevada leading the nation at 14.5% unemployment, I believe we need to leave money in the hands of business investors and enterprising entrepreneurs in order for the economy and employment opportunities grow! Small businesses are extremely vital to the financial well-being of the state?s economy and are essential for economic growth and putting Nevadan?s back to work.
Economy
I believe to get ourselves out of debt we need to get tough on unnecessary spending. Together we can fight for a smaller government with increased accountability, we need to stop spending on programs that are no longer necessary or are not effective, but have been in the system forever, and we need to re-evaluate the remaining programs to ensure they are delivering maximum value to Nevada residents. We need to focus on essential services, just like so many of us who have had to cut our own budgets in this recession.
I believe that it?s time for courageous citizens to step up and say we are each going to do what we can, to make a difference.
Reason for Seeking Public Office:
My parents taught me the value of hard work, dedication and perseverance by working on their mid-west dairy farm with my siblings. I worked my way through school, getting her Bachelor of Science degree in Radio and Television in only 3 years. I used that degree in diverse jobs, both in front and behind the camera; with my own business serving a number of news organizations and groups such as Athletes in Action Division of Campus Crusade for Christ, The Center for Creative Leadership and The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. I moved to Las Vegas in 1998 with her husband of 35 years, Jim Porter. Jim works with the medical community and the Clark County School District providing training services to student athletes. Jan has served as a market research analyst for homebuilders in the valley and as an independent contractor serving a coalition of small business owners. She is the General Manager for Peccole Ranch Community Association. She was appointed as the homeowner representative on the Nevada State Commission for Common-Interest Communities and serves on the board of her own homeowners? association. Jan is a dedicated volunteer with other valley organizations, such as the Green Alliance.
Jan Porter understands the challenges facing families today: It?s all about the economy and jobs. Everyone is concerned about economic recovery, job layoffs and the under-employment of people who are willing to take any job to make ends meet. Parents are concerned about their kids? education and the struggles to keep their homes and pay their medical bills. This economy has created a sandwiched middle class-caring for parents and as well as adult siblings and children many of whom have lost their livelihoods.
This election is not about a political party, it is about people, who by working together and listening to each other, can overcome the serious problems facing our state and find real solutions. By working hard and sacrificing together we can fund the essential services and we can make the tough choices of living within our means, as is required of every family in Nevada, day after day.
