Vote to pass a bill that requires school districts in Kansas to verify household income of students qualifying for free meals.

Highlights:

• Requires school districts to verify that each at-risk student meets the requirements to qualify for free meals under the national school lunch program through direct certification of written evidence of the student’s household gross income (Sec. 1).

• Requires the Kansas Department of Education to provide each school with state aid for reduced-price meals to each student (Sec. 1).

• Prohibits any school district or education agency from seeking or implementing any special assistance payments unless the legislature approves (Sec. 1).

• Authorizes a special council to approve or deny any request for special assistance payments while the legislature is not in session (Sec. 1).

• Specifies that this Act takes effect upon passage (Sec. 2).
