Title: Prohibits Law Enforcement From Wearing Face Coverings
Vote to pass a bill that prohibits law enforcement officers in Virginia from wearing face coverings, with certain exemptions.
Prohibits any law-enforcement officer from wearing a facial covering while engaged in the performance of their official duties (Sec. 1).
Defines “facial covering” as any worn item which hides a substantial portion of the face to conceal the identity of the wearer (Sec. 1).
Exempts the following from the prohibition established under this section (Sec. 1):
A translucent face shield or clear mask that does not conceal the wearer’s identity;
An N95 medical mask or surgical mask worn to protect against disease or infection;
A device necessary to protect against exposure to any toxin, gas, smoke, inclement weather, or other hazardous conditions;
A device necessary for underwater use;
A motorcycle helmet when using a motorcycle or other similar vehicle;
Protective eyewear;
A facial covering used by an officer assigned to a special weapons and tactics (SWAT) team or other specialized tactical unit; and
A facial covering used by an officer assigned to an undercover or surveillance unit where the protection of the officer’s identity is determined necessary by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
Classifies a violation of this section as a Class 1 misdemeanor (Sec. 1).
