Title: Prohibits Local, State, and Federal Law Enforcement From Wearing Face Coverings
Vote to pass a bill that prohibits local, state, and federal law enforcement officers from wearing face coverings in Washington.
Defines “facial covering” as any opaque mask that conceals the facial features of the user, exempting (Sec. 1):
A translucent face shield that does not conceal the wearer’s identity;
A medical or surgical mask to protect against disease; and
A helmet used for protection during transportation.
Defines a law enforcement officer as an employee or agent of the US government authorized to carry firearms, make warrantless arrests and whose duties involve the enforcement of criminal, customs or immigration laws (Sec. 1).
Requires a peace officer to be reasonably identifiable by the display of the officer’s name or other characteristics visible to the public (Sec. 1).
Prohibits law enforcement officers from wearing face coverings while interacting with the public in the execution of their duties, exempting (Sec. 1);
An officer performing their duties in an undercover capacity during an active undercover operation; and
The use of tactical gear by special weapons and tactics teams to protect their faces from harm.
Authorizes individuals detained by officers in violation of this Act to bring forward civil legal action to recover damages against the officer (Sec. 1).
Specifies that this Act takes effect immediately (Sec. 3).
