Title: Requires Municipalities to Permit Backyard Chickens on Residential Property
Vote to pass a bill that requires cities and towns to permit the keeping and raising of chickens on residential property in Maine.
Prohibits municipalities and counties from banning residents from raising chickens on private residential property (Sec. 1).
Limits the number of chickens allowed to 36 or a higher number if permitted by local regulation (Sec. 1.1).
Requires coops to be at least 15 feet from property lines, enclosed with predator-proof mesh, and provide at least 4 square feet of inside space per chicken (Sec. 1.2).
Requires owners to provide at least 10 square feet of outdoor space per chicken (Sec. 1.3).
Requires owners to secure chickens from neighboring properties, prevent unwanted noise and odor, and prevent additional predators and rodents to the area (Sec. 1.4).
