Vote to pass a bill that establishes reporting procedures for mistreatment during perinatal period in Michigan.

Highlights:

• Establishes the Biased and Unjust Care Reporting Act in Michigan (Sec. 1).

• Requires the state Department of Health and Human Services to use a validated tool to receive reports from individuals who are pregnant or in the postpartum period and have received mistreatment in their gynecological or perinatal care (Sec. 5). 

• Specifies requirements for proper gynecological or perinatal care, requiring that all treatment shall (Sec. 5):

• Be culturally appropriate;

• Maintain the patient’s dignity, privacy, and confidentiality;

• Prevent harm or mistreatment; and

• Meet requirements for informed consent.

• Specifies that the department shall use this reporting tool to identify cases of racism in maternal care (Sec. 5). 

• Requires the department to provide a report on the related reporting data that does not contain identifying information about the health professionals or patients involved (Sec. 5).
