Vote to pass a bill that authorizes local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws in Alabama.

Highlights:

• Authorizes local law enforcement to enforce federal immigration laws in Alabama (Sec. 2). 

• Extends and expands previous provisions to allow local and state law enforcement agencies to enter into agreements with federal agencies including the Department of Justice and the Department of Homeland Security, rather than only the Attorney General having this power (Sec. 2). 

• Authorizes sheriff’s deputies and police officers to arrest and detain individuals who are not U.S. citizens (Sec. 2). 

• Requires sheriff’s deputies and police officers to verify an individual’s immigration status by the means of a passport or permanent resident card to arrest them (Sec. 2).

• Specifies that detained individuals shall be transferred to the custody of federal law enforcement (Sec. 2). 

• Specifies that the provisions of this bill shall take effect June 1, 2025 (Sec. 4).
