Vote to pass a bill that requires K-6 math testing three times annually for students in Iowa.

Highlights:

  • Requires each school district in Iowa to assess all students enrolled in K-6 at least three times a year to determine students’ math proficiency (Sec. 3). 

  • Specifies that if a student is not determined to be proficient in math, the school district is required to do all of the following (Sec. 3):

    • Determine that the student is “at-risk”;

    • Assess the student’s proficiency levels at least every other week;

    • Implement extra academic support for the student; and

    • Work with the student’s parents to create a personalized mathematics learning plan.

  • Specifies that the school district shall continue to provide “at-risk” students with the required assessments and plans under the provisions of this bill until one of the following occurs, whichever comes first (Sec. 3):

    • The student performs at benchmark on the statewide summative assessment; or

    • The student performs at benchmark on two consecutive proficiency assessments administered by the district.

  • Specifies that the provisions of this bill shall take effect immediately upon passage and approval by the Governor (Sec. 4).
