Vote to pass a bill that specifies it's a crime to fail to securely store a gun in a house where a minor or someone prohibited from possessing a firearm is present in Virginia.

Highlights:

• Requires an individual who purchases a firearm in a residence with a child or prohibited individual to store it in a locked container, compartment, or cabinet that is inaccessible to such a minor or prohibited individual. (Sec. 1)

• Requires loaded firearms to be in a biometric storage unit that they cannot access.

• Establishes a class 4 misdemeanor for violation of this (Sec. 1).

• Specifies this does not apply to the following (Sec. 1):

• Any individual in lawful possession of a firearm who is carrying such firearm on or about his individual; or

• The storage of any antique firearm as defined by §18.2-308.2:2.

• Specifies that this does not prevent any individual from lawfully authorizing a minor to access a firearm under § 18.2-56.2 (Sec. 1).

• Requires every dealer to post conspicuously the following message "Any individual who possesses a firearm in a residence where such individual knows that a minor or an individual who is prohibited by law from possessing a firearm is present shall store such firearm and the ammunition for such firearm in a locked container, compartment, or cabinet that is inaccessible to such minor or prohibited individual.
