Vote to concur with House amendments and pass a bill that prohibits workplace or housing discrimination on the basis of individual protected traits or on the basis of the intersectionality (combination) of 2 or more protected traits in California.

Highlights:

• Amends the Unruh Civil Rights Act, the provisions of the Education Code prohibiting discrimination in public education, and the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) to prohibit discrimination on the basis not just of individual protected traits, but also on intersectionality (e.g., combination) of 2 or more protected traits (Sec. 2-7).

• Defines “protected class” for this bill as the following, including (Sec. ):

• Disability;

• Gender;

• Gender identity or gender expression;

• Nationality;

• Race or ethnicity;

• Religion;

• Sexual orientation, or

• Any other characteristic that is contained in the definition of hate crimes

• Amends FEHA to clarify that the protected characteristics enumerated in the statute include a combination of those characteristics (Sec. 2-7).
